Theme Builder: Elementor templates that wrap WordPress queries
Theme Builder templates are not landing pages. They wrap the current WordPress query. Theme Builder widgets (title, content, featured image, archive loop) read that query — they look empty on a random page.

What it actually does
Supported types in the admin UI: Single, Archive, Author, Search, and 404 (stored as not_found). WooCommerce shop templates belong to Woo Builder, not here.
Elementor document controls include Template Type, Location, Preview Post ID, Preview Term ID, Preview Author ID, and Preview Search Query so the canvas can fake a real query.
When two templates match the same URL, Priority decides the winner. Conditions are AND-combined location rules.
Theme Builder widgets are listed separately from the public 80+ widget set because they only make sense on these templates.
Where to find it in WordPress
King Addons → Dashboard → enable Theme Builder. Open the Theme Builder menu (king-addons-theme-builder). Create a template and set Template Type.
How to set it up
- Enable Theme Builder. Dashboard toggle, then open the Theme Builder menu.
- Pick a type. Single for posts/pages, Archive for blog indexes, Author, Search, or 404.
- Design with TB widgets. Drop post title, content, featured image, meta, or archive posts — they bind to the current query.
- Set location and priority. Assign where the template applies. Raise priority if another template also matches.
- Preview with real data. Fill preview post/term/author/search fields, then confirm on a live permalink.
Controls that change behavior
| Control | What the plugin does |
|---|---|
| Template Type | Single, Archive, Author, Search, or 404. |
| Location | Which WordPress contexts use this document. |
| Preview Post / Term / Author / Search | Editor-only IDs so dynamic widgets have something to render. |
| Priority | Tie-breaker when multiple templates match. |
When this is the right tool
- A custom single-post layout without editing the theme’s single.php.
- An archive grid that is not the theme’s blog index.
- A designed 404 that still uses WordPress’s 404 query.
Notes from the implementation
Do not put Theme Builder widgets on a static landing page and expect them to show the latest post. They need a Theme Builder template context. More on kingaddons.com.
